About us

What is sandplay?

Jungian Sandplay is a powerful method of non-verbal psychotherapy based on the work of Swiss child therapist Dora Kalff and rooted in Carl Jung's theories. Sandplay Therapy is effective with clients of all ages, and when conducted by a trained therapist, it interacts with the unconscious in a safe manner.

Sandplay is primarily a non-verbal, non-logical way of working and can be used alongside talk therapy with adults, adolescents, and children. Using a collection of miniatures and a special tray filled with sand, the client creates their own three-dimensional image in the sand, representing their deeper inner world. It is extremely important that the therapist using this method has received high-level training.

There are no rules regarding how or what each client should create. The choice is theirs, both in how to shape the wet or dry sand and how many or which figures to choose to "build" their own world on the tray.

A series of such trays created during the therapeutic work is referred to as the client’s "process." The therapist may only "analyze" these trays with the client after the process is complete and the therapy has concluded.

The process that occurs in Sandplay represents the deeper inner psychological world of the client through the use of symbols, allowing access to the right hemisphere of the brain while bypassing the logical interventions of the left hemisphere. The right hemisphere guides the creation of images on the tray through the placement of symbols chosen by the client from the entire collection of figures available in the Sandplay therapy space.

When the client works on the tray with the sand, their psyche (in the sense defined by C. Jung) is led to the experience that has caused the blockage, such as trauma. What this experience will be and how far back the client needs to go depends entirely on their psyche. From this point, the client’s process unfolds, gradually leading to healing. According to Jung, "Man’s task is to become conscious of the contents that press upward from the unconscious."

Jungian Sandplay is one of the most powerful forms of psychotherapy when conducted by a certified, experienced therapist. Sandplay can work wonders in the therapy of adults, adolescents, and children. Beyond enhancing self-confidence and self-image and creating a positive expectation for the future that may arise from a deeper understanding of the individual’s potential, it can also serve as an excellent medium for trauma treatment. Whether it involves specific traumatic experiences or attachment trauma, the approach of Sandplay is gentle, non-threatening, non-pressuring, and without expectations. The body and soul find the space to transform at their own pace.

Furthermore, with the use of Sandplay, it is possible to manage nearly all issues that constitute the client's clinical picture (depressive feelings, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, etc.). Sandplay enhances the formation of a positive self-image, the recognition of strong elements of personality, and the acquisition of a sense of balance in daily life, which is a common request among many people seeking therapy.

The duration of therapy can be accelerated, as the use of the sand tray helps facilitate numerous realizations on the part of the client much more quickly and in a sequence and timing that they are ready to accept.

Sandplay supports the development of the psyche through a natural healing process that follows the rhythm, resilience, and essential, deeper needs of the client.
